LOCATION TEMPORARILY CLOSED - PLEASE VISIT THE TAPROOM. - Front Street Brewery is the oldest continually operating brew pub and second oldest continually operating brewery in the state of Iowa. Established in 1992, it was the 300th craft brewery in the United States, founded by master brewer and engineer, Steve Zuidema. The brewery’s humble beginnings featured a 7-barrel brew house in the basement of the current restaurant location on East River Drive in downtown Davenport. The 100 year-old building is nestled along the banks of the Mississippi River in what was once known as the “Bucktown” neighborhood. In those days, River Drive was known as Front Street. The Bucktown neighborhood itself was known for its plethora of drinking establishments and houses of ill repute, which earned Davenport the moniker of “Wickedest City in America.”
Just months after opening Front Street Brewery, the “Great Flood of the Mississippi River” engulfed most of downtown Davenport in 1993 and completely submerged the entire brew pub, including the original basement-level brewery. Out of this tragedy one of Front Street’s flagship beers, Raging River, was born and the brew pub pressed on.
In 2012 the brewing operation moved to its current location in The Freight House, just four blocks away on West River Drive. The Zuidema-designed brew house was upgraded to a 15-barrel system that fed four 15-barrel fermentation vessels, all manufactured locally by Crawford Company under Steve’s direction. This move was the impetus for the restaurant to expand seating and kitchen space, while a tap room opened inside the new brewery.
In 2016 Front Street Brewery was acquired by the current ownership group, who increased fermentation capacity to five 30-barrel vessels, allowing for distribution-level production. Front Street Brewery prides itself on making quality, consistent brews crafted by hand – enjoy one today!
It is be an exciting time for any brewer in the U.S. right now, we are at a time of innovation and experimentation in the brewing industry, that has brewers constantly asking, what beer is and what can it be and where does our brewery fit in to it all. The craft beer movement in this country has us constantly testing the limitations that we thought beer had, and that is pretty exciting. We at Front Street are also always excited by the social aspect of beer, we love to see people come into the Taproom and connect and make memories over pint.
Front Street Brewery produced over 2,500 barrels of beer in 2018.
